If They Won’t Fund Education, Let’s Do It Ourselves

June 14, 2007

I first saw this on ABC’s World News Tonight. It’s a program called “Donors Choose,” which helps teachers whose budgets don’t cover their projects find donors willing to help out. You go to the site, you find a project you think worthy, you donate what you can. Every little bit helps.

You can help a music class pay for an instrument, help an art teacher buy colored pencils, help send some little kids on a field trip — whatever appeals to you. Many of the projects can potentially help schools fund programs that are generally the first cut when money gets tight — art, music, drama, etc.

We have comparatively little control over where many of our tax dollars ultimately end up. And many of those who do have that control seem intent on failing to adequately fund the truly important in favor of the politically expedient. Their priorities needn’t be ours!
